Introduction

About the Laser Hair Removal Process

Laser hair removal is designed to permanently reduce hair growth. However, it doesn't work as quickly as one might expect. The laser hair removal process requires multiple sessions over the span of several months. This article will provide some information about the history and process of laser hair removal.

History

Before laser hair removal was introduced to regular people, it was primarily used for experimental purposes for twenty years or so. Dermatologist's eventually decided that laser hair removal is a safe and effective form of hair reduction, and in the mid nineteen ninety's, it was finally introduced for consumer use. Since then, it's been a popular form of hair reduction.

The Process

About the Laser Hair Removal Process

Laser hair removal works by selectively damaging pigment by heating certain target matter. In the case of laser hair removal, melanin is the target matter. Melanin adds color to your hair and skin. The laser is built to target dark melanin, and therefore, the most ideal candidate for laser hair removal is a person with dark hair and pale skin. Laser hair removal will have little or no effect on a person with light hair, however, there are certain types of lasers available that will work on a person who has dark hair and dark skin.

Laser hair removal is done over a period of several sessions. There are typically four to seven sessions, depending on the person. These sessions are usually done four to eight weeks apart, depending on how quickly the hair begins to resurface. This has to do with the fact that some hairs that have been dormant for several years will begin to resurface. Multiple sessions of laser hair removal ensure that all hairs are treated.

In some places, laser hair removal can be used by anyone. In fact, there are lasers available that can be operated at home. However, certain states require that a registered physician or nurse do it, as it's categorized under the practice of medicine.

Speed and efficiency are one of the most popular benefits of laser hair removal, however this has a lot to do with the skill and experience the operator has, and the availability of several laser technologies to use during the procedure.

Tips and comments

Laser hair removal can sometimes cause pain. Before your session, consider taking a pain killer. Also, there are numbing creams available that can be applied to the skin, and may ease the pain.

Laser hair removal works over a succession of sessions. If you want laser hair removal, don't expect any kind of a quick fix. The process can take up to six months, or longer.

Some side effects of laser hair removal can include itchiness, redness and swelling around the area that's been treated. These side effects may be unpleasant, however, they shouldn't last any more than a few days.

After the initial treatment is finished, and the subject has gone through all the necessary sessions, there is a possibility that the subject will have to go back for "maintenance" sessions in later years, to guarantee that hair growth remains dormant.
