What You Need To Know About Laser Hair Removal

Hair laser removal is a popular method of reducing hair growth, and effectively getting rid of it over a set period of time. It's most effective on individuals who have pale skin and dark hair, particularly coarse dark hair. This article will explain a little bit about hair laser removal and explain what you should know about it.

History

Before hair laser removal was even introduced to the public, it was performed experimentally for over 20 years. In the middle of the 1990s, it finally became available to the public. The general dermatology community accepts hair laser removal as being effective in the removal or reduction of hair.

Hair laser removal works using a process called selective photothermolysis. Essentially, the laser targets dark matter called melanin. Melanin occurs in both the skin and the hair, and gives it color. The laser, however, only targets dark melanin. Therefore, a person with blond or even red hair would not be an ideal candidate for hair laser removal, and should find a different means of reducing or getting rid of hair growth.

What You Need To Know About Laser Hair Removal

In order for it to be completely effective, hair laser removal will need to be done in several sessions. Usually a month apart, or every other month. Hair laser removal at its full effectiveness achieves over 80% of hair loss. To achieve its full effectiveness, a person will have to attend in between four and seven sessions.

Between sessions, some of the hair will regrow. Hairs that have been dormant in the past will begin to grow, resulting in the need for multiple hair laser removal sessions. Participating in multiple hair laser removal sessions will ensure that all hairs have been treated and that hair ceases to grow.

After finishing the initial sessions involved with hair laser removal, some patients may feel the need to revisit once or twice a year for "maintenance sessions." This prevents any hair from growing back in the future.

A small percentage of patients who have tried hair laser removal will experience some hair resurfacing, or growing back. This usually occurs in candidates that aren't ideal, or who have light hair. Because hair laser removal targets dark melanin, it may not be particularly effective in candidates who have light colored hair or patients who have dark colored skin.

Tips and comments

Hair laser removal is most effective on people who have dark hair and pale skin. Therefore, if you have light hair and light skin, or dark skin and dark hair, you may not be an ideal candidate for hair laser removal. If this is the case, it may be best to avoid hair laser removal altogether and consider a different hair removal method.

Anybody who wants to try hair laser removal should bear in mind that they will have to attend several sessions in order for it to be fully effective; it isn't a quick fix. Also, you may have to attend "maintenance sessions" yearly to effectively keep hair growth at bay.

In comparison to waxing and shaving, hair laser removal is a more effective and convenient means for removing hair. If you're an ideal candidate, it may be worth a try.
