In 1773, mental illness hospital was first constructed in USA in Williamsburg. By the end of 1840, only eight shelters for the insane and mentally ill were constructed in USA. Dr Dorothea Dix was the first doctor who took an initiative for the establishment and enlargement of 32 mental hospitals and transferred mental illness patients from various jails and asylums. In 1930 the US public health service established the Narcotics Division, later named the Division of Mental Hygiene, that brought together research and treatment programs to combat drug addiction and studied the causes for preventing and treating nervous as well as mental diseases. It was after this program that the need for proper education in mental health was felt, which later resulted in the inception of formal mental health masters degree.
