Bird Strike Dangers

Introduction

Ever since humanity started to fly with the help of machines or other techniques, birds have become quite a hazard for airplanes. Over the years, thousands of aircrafts strike birds in the air causing damage to the aircraft or posing a threat for passengers.

Planes strike birds frequently. The reasons behind these plane strike birds incidents are many. One of the main reasons is the attractiveness posed by the airports for the birds to live in the areas surrounding it. Most of the airports are situated outside the city with vast lands of unused space which has natural vegetation growing in them. This environment makes it good for the bird to settle their in flocks and so increasing strike bird rates.

The second reason that drives birds in those areas is the ever increasing urban population which has lesser vegetation and other such elements that are essential for a birds habitat. This increase of urban population indirectly increases the airplane frequency in the air as well. Very few places are left in the air that is not being used as a passage for aircrafts.

These reasons combine together to pose a great threat to the airplanes that strike birds. Out of all the aircrafts that strike birds, the military aircrafts are on the maximum chance of striking with birds as in their nap of the earth training missions they have to fly low and at a very high speed. On an estimate the speed attained by them is 500 knots and the aircraft is at a distance of 500 feet from the earth which is a real thing.

What happens when a bird strikes? For starters, the planes strike birds at an enormous speed and which eventually will kill the bird. Most of the times, if the bird has struck the windshield then it get stuck on the glass obstructing the view. This disables the pilots sitting in the cockpit and many times plane crashes because the pilot was unable to land properly.

In other cases, the bird can get ingested in the engines of the planes as well. Most of the large jet planes are accustomed to the hazard of a bird getting stuck in the engine and normally this only causes minor damage. But if a flock of birds strike the airplane and a lot of birds get ingested in the engines of the jet aircraft then the damage is enormous and most of the times the aircrafts have crashed in these situations.
