How To Keep Birds As Pets

Published at 03/25/2012 21:53:17

Introduction

Keeping birds as pets requires mindfulness. Pet birds are relatively low maintenance, but it is a serious responsibility to take care of birds. Still, no matter how low maintenance it may seem, you should be able to carry out the necessary steps in caring for birds.

Step 1

Proper feeding is mandatory for all pets, whatever type of animal they are. Nuts, seeds, and leafy greens are some of the usual foods for pets birds. Always feed your bird at the right time and give them the necessary feeds that they need. Your birds will no doubt melodiously tweet thank you to you.

Step 2

Birds are meant to fly, or at least freely roam around, and not be contained in a small cage. Still, the reality is that keeping a pet bird does entail putting it in a cage, and the least thing that you can do is to have a cage that is spacious enough for your bird to still be able to exercise its flying rights. A number of bird owners even release their pets birds from its cage once in a while, as long as the bird knows how to fly back home. To test this, you can put the cage in a spacious room, close all doors and Windows, and free your bird out of its cage. See if it returns back to its cage on its own, and if it does, your bird has most likely regarded its cage as its home sweet home, so theres no need to worry.

Step 3

Communicate with your bird. Just as you would your dog or kitten, also talk to your pets birds. All creatures are made to communicate, both verbally and otherwise. Some bird species can even imitate the sounds they hear in their environment, such as Quaker Parrots and African Greys. The wonders that these bird species are capable of are simply remarkable and entertaining.

Step 4

Steer clear of cats. Birds are wonderful prey for cats. Be sure that the environment into which your bird is caged is cat-free. Many bird owners have testified that their pets birds have been happily devoured by cats, so be alert.

Step 5

Research and know the special needs of your bird. With the different kinds and classifications of bird species, it is imperative to be aware of the specific needs of your pets birds. This depends on its type of species. With the Internet, it is impossible not to be able to get information about your pet bird. You can also ask your veterinarian, the pet shop personnel, or the bird enthusiast who sold you or gave you your pets birds.

Tips and comments

Be sure to address your pet birds needs with love and affection. Birds pets lovers care for are special creatures that possess unique gifts and qualities, so make the most out of this and be a responsible pet owner.
