Choosing Domain Names for Websites

Many people who finally decide to start their own website, get so excited about the prospect of a new business venture that they do not realize the importance of selecting domain names for their website. There are several factors that really should be considered for buying domain names. Selecting a website address also known as a domain name can greatly effect the number of visitors to your site and income. Take a look at these suggestions before making a decision about choosing domain names for websites.

Step 1

Consider your name if the business will be recognized by your name. If no one knows your name, and it has no history, than you are probably better off to use keywords associated with your product. Domain names for websites must also be catchy and easy to remember if possible. Long drawn out names with no name recognition are more than likely only to be visited when someone has bookmarked your website address.

Step 2

Before you can purchase and register your name as your own, you must first discover if it has already been registered by someone else. Each domain name for websites must be unique and cannot be assigned to more than one website. For example, John Jones is a very common name and could easily already be assigned to someone else.

Step 3

Select domain names for your website name by using a major search engine such as Yahoo or Google. Type in your first and last name side by side with no spaces. The search engine should return results with the exact spelling of your name and a variety of suffixes such as .com, .biz, .org and so on. If the name is already in use, you might consider a variation that would still be highly recognized. Assuming your name is available, you can pay a fee to register the name at a registrars website.

Step 4

Research the Internet using keyword tools to discover the number of monthly searches done on a keyword, keyword phrases or the name of a service. Your goal is to determine how popular a keyword is and whether it would be ideal for potential domain names for your website. Try using SEO Book Keyword Suggestion Tool, Keyword Discovery, WordTracker or the Google Keyword Tool.

Step 5

Make up a list of likely words or phrases that potential customers might use to search on about your product or service. Type each one into the keyword tool and note how many searches are done monthly for that word or phrase. Small-sized niches may range up to 100 and larger niches to 500 searches. Take the keywords that fall into either range and type them into a major search engine such as Google. The search results will show the quantity of websites ranking for the keyword in the top of the results. Note the best keywords that are 500,000 or less. Smaller numbers are better because that means less competition for the keyword and the more likely domain names for these keywords would place higher in search engine results.

Tips

Most people combine two to three keywords together to form a phrase that the public can easily remember or that makes sense, when choosing domain names for websites. If you have selected a couple of domain names for your website or blog, be sure and register them right away to obtain ownership before someone else gets them.
