Great Advice For Hard Drives Storage

Published at 02/10/2012 21:08:05

Introduction

Whether internal or external, a hard drive is a storage device that stores and retrieves data from your computer. An internal hard drive can dramatically increase the size, efficiency, and speed of your computer. External hard drives storage are handy too, because you’re computer can’t always handle all of the data you might like to keep in storage. External hard drives storage provide an easy, portable way to put your data into storage. Also, they’re great backup just in case your computer crashes.

Step 1

Buying a Hard Drive:

When looking for a hard drive, make sure you do your research, and figure out what your needs are. Hard drive storage technologies are changing all the time, so make sure you know what you’re looking for. Once you know that, you can buy a hard drive that effectively suits your needs.

Tips

Consider the Interface:

The interface will determine how your hard drive will communicate with your computer. Firstly, make sure that the interface of the hard drive is compatible with you computer. Hard drives have a few different interfaces, pick the one that best suits your storage needs.

Consider speed:

Some hard drives are faster then others. When you’re looking to put files into your hard drives storage, consider the transfer rates. If the hard drive you’re planning to buy has a slow transfer rate, not only will it take a long time to move your files, it will slow down your computer.

Does it have a warranty? Check if there’s a warranty available, and check how long that warranty lasts. With electronics, one can never be too safe.

What does it include? Make sure that the Hard Drive includes all the components necessary to install and use it. Otherwise, you may end up taking it home to find that you have to buy more parts.

Recovering from Hard Drive failure:

Unfortunately many users experience the problem of their hard drives failing. All of their storage is lost. So what can be done to prevent it?

Keep it clean:

Dust is everywhere, and, it gets into your PC. One simple precaution to take is to clean out your PC or external hard drive with air every so often. Canned air is available at any general store. Pick some up, and make it a routine to blow out your PC every so often.

Some More Tips

Prevent heat:

One major problem with hard drives is that they generate excessive amounts of heat, and then, they overheat. Again, your storage is lost. One easy way to prevent this is to install a fan that attaches to your hard drive. These are surprisingly cheap, and can be found at just about any computer store. Ask around.

Back up your files:

Consider buying a flash drive or an external hard drive to back up your files just in case failure occurs. While you may already have an external hard drive, you can never be too safe.

Data Recovery:

If all else fails, and you do lose your hard drive, certain companies will perform Data Recovery for a nominal fee. While you’ll likely still have to replace your hard drive, you’ll retrieve all of your data.
