Are Universities Or Community Colleges a Better Choice For Working Moms?

Introduction

As a working mother, you have plenty of committments each day. Between your work schedule and your family, you're always juggling something. When you decide that you want to add school to the mix, it's important for you to make the best choice for your situation. You want your commitment to school work to mesh as seamlessly as possible with your current schedule. Whether you choose to consider universities or community colleges can depend on many different things. For instance, distance, prices, courses offered and atmosphere are all things you must consider when choosing between the two types of institutions.

Distance and Convenience

When choosing between universities or community colleges, you should consider the distance from your home or work to each option in your area. For instance, if you pass by a university on your way home from work, you may want to consider attending clases there. Or maybe a community college is near your house, which could work well if you work from home or if you want a short drive home after classes. Convenience is also a factor. Think about the parking at each of the universities or commmunity colleges that are options for you. If one place has plentiful parking, it may be worth it to you to enroll there rather than have to search for a parking spot or park far away and walk.

Courses Offered

Another consideration is the courses offered at the different universities or colleges. You need to find the one that has the best offerings for the certification or degree program that you want to pursue. Some community colleges may not offer what you want, such as a four-year degree. If you are pursuing an associate's degree or some type of certification, a community college may be the right choice for you. Visit the website for each institution and view the course offerings to find out which universities or community colleges can meet your needs. Also, compare degree or certification programs so you can find one that offers the courses you are most interested in taking. You can also contact the registrar's office for each institution ask that course catalogs be mailed to you. That should make it easier to compare the different universities or community college programs.

Prices and Atmosphere

Price is always a factor when considering enrolling in college. Typically, the prices beween universities and community colleges tend to vary. University prices are often higher so, if you can get the education you desire at a community college, do so and you will probably save money. However, don't commit to a program solely based on price. You may not get what you want.

The atmosphere or vibe at the universities or community colleges you investigate is important. If you have a choice between a campus filled with students who are  18 to 24, and you are in your 30s or 40s, you may feel less comfortable than you would if you attending a campus that had a significant number of non-traditional students. Visit each campus of the universities or community colleges that you are serious about attending. Try to get a feel for the vibe of the place. Visit community areas and other places students gather.
