How To Get Counseling Masters Degree In Mental Health

Published at 07/14/2011 12:51:38

Mental health refers to the condition in which a person is in a state of complete mental stability. The World Health Organization (WHO) describes mental health as "a state of well-being in which the individual realizes his or her own abilities, can cope with the normal stresses of life, can work productively and fruitfully, and is able to make a contribution to his or her community". However, cultural differences, personal assessments, and professional theories effect how “mental health” is defined. Mental health counselors attend to patients who face psychological problems and guide them through their illnesses. Before the late 70’s the masters degree wasn’t much popular, but after a lot of research it was realized that the counselors with the master’s degree were better therapists than the rest. A master’s degree is an academic degree granted to individuals who have undergone study demonstrating a mastery or high-order overview of a specific field of study or area of professional practice.

While some states will grant a counseling degree to those who have earned a bachelor degree in mental health, most require the completion of an accredited masters degree program that consists of 48 to 60 semester hours and two years of supervised training in a mental health clinic. You cant decide about getting a masters degree all of a sudden, in fact you have to prepare yourself for this degree even before you get a bachelors degree. While at under graduate level, you have to choose courses, which could favor you later. One of these courses is Statistics. It has been reported that at least one course in stats is should be taken by all those who plan to apply for a masters degree. Another one is Experimental Methods. A course in Abnormal Psychology is not exactly a basic requirement but graduate programs always prefer it. Child development and personality psychology are also among the preferred subjects. Students who have attended these courses always have an upper hand in comparison to those who don't. The courses above offer a glimpse of which classes you should take as an undergraduate student. If you are preparing for graduate school, be sure to check the specific admission requirements of your chosen school.

In addition to the appropriate coursework, most graduate programs also require applicants to take the GRE. The GRE Psychology test is a standardized exam that is often used as part of the admissions process for graduate school programs in the United States and other English-speaking countries. Before you take the test, you should first become familiar with the basic structure of the exam as well as the content covered by the test. Most editions of the GRE Psychology test contain between 200 and 215 multiple-choice questions. Each questions contains five different options and the test-taker must then select the option that best answers the question. Questions on the GRE Psychology test are taken from core knowledge commonly taught in undergraduate-level courses. The general psychology questions focus on areas such as psychology history, statistics, research design, test construction and applied psychology. After all this, a student is admitted to a graduate school where he can earn his masters degree within 2 years.

Tips and comments:

In my view, psychology is one of the best fields to opt for. It is not only highly stable but also highly paid. With heavy incomes, a person also gets personal satisfaction while doing well for the humankind. Thus, every one should choose this and also earn a masters degree from a well-reputed institute, which offers quality education. Institutes all over the world offer masters degree, and more and more people should opt for it.
