Introduction

The body needs all the essential nutrients in the right quantities for it to function efficiently. Thus, the importance of a balanced diet is always stressed by doctors. Most people get more than enough fats, proteins and carbohydrates but often neglect the intake of vitamins. Some of the benefits of vitamins include the healthy skin that B vitamins enable one to maintain. Vitamins A, K and C are also recommended for skin care.

History

The effects B vitamins have on skin are complex. Let us examine them in greater detail. B vitamins comprise of different types of vitamins like vitamins like B1, B2 and so on. Deficiency of these vitamins has been linked to some of the most serious diseases of the human body. A chronic deficiency of B vitamins is fatal. Some of the dangerous diseases caused by vitamin B deficiency include nervous disorders, beriberi, cardiovascular disorders and ariboflavinosis. Ariboflavinosis causes dry, parched skin, especially around the mouth and the genitals. B vitamins play a major role in metabolism. Metabolism is a process which involves utilization of energy from the foods that we eat. The process of metabolism can be divided into two separate processes – catabolism and anabolism. Catabolism refers to converting food into a form of energy that is usable by the body while anabolism is process where this energy is actually put to use to maintain the functions of the body. If there is a deficiency in vitamins, then this impairs the body’s ability to derive energy from food. This affects all the organs and functions of the body. The skin is said to be the body’s medium of communicating its overall health. Thus unhealthy skin is indicative of poor health. The positive effects B vitamins have on the skin are the result of a good metabolic rate.

Features

Acne is one of the major skin problems that affect billions of people all over the world. Pimples and blackheads are caused largely due to a deficiency of Vitamin B6. Acne is just one of the ill effects on skin that a B vitamin deficiency causes. If there is proper intake of vitamin B, skin normally remains moist and glowing. Other effects of B vitamin deficiency are loose, wrinkly skin that makes one look old. This is due to obvious reasons. When the body undergoes a chronic problem with its metabolism, the cells begin to degenerate and the body thinks that it has become old. This is reflected on the skin in the form of lines and wrinkles. With a proper supply of vitamin B, skin remains radiant and beautiful.
